Convocation Part II

Wow, time flies and my convocation is a 2 weeks history ! This post, I would share with you what happen exactly during the convocation day, the up and the downs.

On 8th of August 2009, I am going to attend my convocation at Wisma MCA at about 1 pm. Few days prior to that glorious day, I already start planning the schedule for myself, family and friends.

On 7th of August 2009, I plan to sleep a little bit early, at around 1 am so that I could be fresh the next day. All of a sudden, my phone rang at approximately 10 pm. It was Jonas. He called me to change and get ready as the whole gang is coming to pick me up. I was like wtf ? I changed and my gang drag me out for a drinking session. Well, they have a good intention of celebrating my last night as a non-graduand. Lol. However, the drinking session lasted for a few hours and by the time I look at my watch, its already 3 am+ and its time to go. It's getting late and I need to wake up at 9 am to get things ready for my convocation.

I slept at 4 am ++ and it was a really good sleep (I thought that I would be excited gila until cannot fall asleep at first). When I woke up it's about 9.15 am. Then I remembered my date with TC and TM @ Melati Utama at 10.30 am. "Fuck" I said, and I have to rush to get things ready. It was really quite a scene as I run around my house, going to the bathroom, have my breakfast in the kitchen, changed into the formality clothes, get my gown and blazers ready, style my hair (yeah, I know we are wearing that hood thingy, but heck, before that I don't wear anything so styling my hair is a must !), den put the stuff into my car and rush to MU. No luck, I caught in a jam near Batu Caves and I arrived at MU around 11 am, 30 minutes late =.=". Only then I found out, TM's parents were inside his car. Feel so guilty to have auntie and uncle wait me for 30 minutes =.=".

Without much delay, we started off our journey from MU at 11am +. I lead the way, while two of them follow me from behind. By the time we reach there, Sean called and he is already parking his car in some menara. We parked our cars in Menara Citibank and met up with Sean and Han Wee at Menara Citibank.

Tau Ciunn, Me, Sean, Han Wee, Teik Min @ Menara Citibank

We wait there for a while for others to arrive. We manage to do some catching up and gossip abit before heading towards Wisma MCA at 12.15 pm ++. There we met up with Hoi Ling, Kai Jie and others before we went into the robing room. I was quite surprised when Eunice told me that they are going to give out the scroll according to honour class. For my class, I am the first to receive my scroll, as they are following alphabetical descending order and I have a "C" in front. God, what a blow, that basically mean I am the first to get the scroll for my course. Nervous and anxious, both feelings struck me at the same time.

Then we went "check in" into the robing room, where we gonna put on our robes, assisted by some officials from UTAR. For the first time after graduation, the entire course finally gathered again in that room. We all look extremely excited for what may happen in the next few hours. What do you expect, since most of us have spend more than 18 years studying to earn a degree. We start changing into our graduation attire and of course, start camwhoring in that attire. What we do best when we have a camera ? Camwhore. Lol.

After lining up according to the name and honours, we were lead to the a waiting area, where we are stood in lines and wait for the entry ceremony to begin. There, while waiting, we camwhore again (that is how addicted we are into taking nice photos).

With some of the girls !

After staying at the corridor for approximately 20 minutes, we were ushered into the hall by the marshal and we walk into the hall proudly with flashes from cameras beaming on us. Our entry marks the begin of the entry ceremony - first the graduands, then the academicians, the council members, president and the guest of honours. All in an ordered sequence. The first few of us were quite lucky as the camera was directly facing us when we make our entry. Hence, a few of us did appear on the screen that day and we also appeared on the DVD of the entire ceremony. Here are some pictures of that entry ceremony,

After we are being seated, we wait for other graduates to make their entrance. We are the first few courses to enter the hall and thus we have are seated quite front. There, we start doing what we love most again... camwhore !!

Taking some pictures before the ceremony begins

Teik Min with the rest of them

Our guest of honour for my graduation session is the current health Minister of Malaysia, Dato' Seri Liow Tiong Lai. I hoped Dr. Ling Liong Sik would be present but I was a little disappointed to know he did attend the session I am in, but instead he was represented by a UTAR council member, Dr. Milton. Then of course, the speech ceremony begins, with Dr. Milton giving a speech followed by a super duper long speech by the President and then the guest of honour.

Then, the most anticipated event begin- the scroll giving ceremony. We were being ushered off to the side and line up there and wait for our turn. As the first graduand from my course getting the scroll, I was entrusted with 2 digital cards, one displaying my course name and the other one displaying my name and picture on the 2 big screen. ROFL, damn high man that time. Nervous, anxious, happy, excited, crazy, sad. All the feelings just jump into me at that moment !

Then it was my turn. I was on the stage, waiting for them to announce my course name. But before they call on to my name, I am already into this highly excited mode that I start to walk a step or two towards the guest of honour, only to be pull back by the marshall on stage. Many might not notice that, but if you have bought the DVD, you will notice how anxious I am that time ! Haha.

Dang dang ! Finally, at 3.40 pm ++, I received my scroll from Dato' Seri Liow Tiong Lai, marking a "temporary" end on my remarkable journey in education, from 4 years old, a kid that knows nothing, to 22 years old, a young adult that know something, at least. Hahaha. Right after receiving my scroll, my memories start to flash back on all these major events that happen during this 18 years. Its just like, in a blip of an eye, I am 22, a degree holder and what I can expect in the future ? Man... the future is just full of uncertainities. It is fun to live with uncertainities, cause that is what makes life fun :D.

Us with our scrolls in our hands - finally !

When the ceremony is over I went out of the hall and search through the crowd for all my beloved friends that have come to see their friend, me, graduating from his degree course. So touch, and best of all, Jonas purposely come back from Hong Kong for a few days just to attend this (thou his main intention is holiday and clubbing) before returning to Adelaide.

Also, took some pictures with my family....

With my maternal side family..

Guess what. This post alone took me more than 2 weeks to write. I just dont have enough time these days... I like err.. keep dragging things instead of getting it done on the spot. I apologize for not updating the blog regularly. The life now is really taking a toll on me. I am totally occupied on weekdays and I can only take a good break on weekend. Hence dont be surprised to see me dancing away my weekend at some clubs, cause I really need something to chill my mind :D. Till the next post, take care ya everyone !

(2) The table:
Round/oval - any friends that came along, you will accept and trust them completely

NO - when your partner is around, you will stick around with him/her most of the time.

(9) The money from the clear water pool:
YES - when your partner is not around you, you will still flirt around with others.
NO - even when your partner is not around, you will still think of her and and will be loyal to him/her, not flirting around with others.

(10) The size of the box:
small - low ego
medium - average ego
big - high ego

(11) Material of the box (outlook of the box):
cardboard/paper/wooden(non-shining) - humble personality
metal - proud and stuck up personality

(12) The material of the bridge:
metal bridge - have very strong bond with your friends
wooden bridge - average bond with your friends
rattan bridge - you are not in good terms with your friends

(13) Colour of the horse:
white - your partner is pure and good in your heart.
grey/brown - your partner is only average in your heart.
black - your partner doesn’t seem to be good in your heart and appears to be bad sign.

(iii) or lastly if you choose the horse, you seek your partner whenever your partner whenever you are met with problems.

_______________________________________________________________

I can't believe it ! Both times also I choose to pick up the jewel and gold from the pond. That means I am flirty when my gf is with me, and might be worst when she is not around :P. Hahaha. Apart of that, I did good. I seek my partner whenever I have problems and my partner is very pure and good in my heart *Cough* *Cough*.

And I always consider that I have only fullfill half of all my wishes. Another half depends on the next year few years of my life ! Gambateh !!!

p/s: I have a strong sex drive *wink* Hahahahahahahaha.

Convocation (Part 1 )

The day finally arrived. It was 8th of August, Year 2009. A day that I would remember for life, for it to be the day, where I step on the stage to receive my scroll, a sign that I have already graduated from University Tunku Abdul Rahman with a Bachelor degree in Biochemistry.

3 years of hardwork, 6 semesters in academic calenders, ~96 weeks of classes/labs/in FES compound and uncountable amount of time that I have spent with my university friends. Sweet, sour, bitter, we have tasted it all. Arguments, tears, laugh and crisis, we have seen it all. We have come this far, to this day, where we are no longer classmates/coursemates but we are friends, and we are friends for life.

When I first made a decision that will change my life entirely, I wasn't too sure about the potential outcome of my decision. That decision is to get me enrolled into a program known as Certificate of Pre University Studies in Tunku Abdul Rahman College. Upon the completion of the program, I am allowed to do Biotechnology in UTAR.

Those that have known me for years, must have known that Mr. Alex Cheang is actually a "banana". Yeah. He originate from Sekolah Kebangsaan, meaning that he had not being taught of his own mother language during his primary years. However, his father put a strong emphasize on the learning of mother language but he had no interest in it and after 6 years of private tuition, his parents abandon the idea of him learning his own mother language. And it really surprises his parents, when he came up with the idea of joining TARC/UTAR because both institution is famous for Chinese community.

His life there ? Well. In the beginning it wasn't really that great. He suffered culture shock beause all this while he was surrounded by English/Cantonese speakers in school and all of a sudden, he is surrounded by Cantonese/Mandarin speaker only. The first few months were like hell for him. But he had a strong will and he knows that if he try, he can make it. Then, he met some really good friends in college where they taught him how to speak proper Mandarin, bring him to sing k along with them, ask him out for yam char/shopping on the weekend.

Then there comes the university life. When he finish his foundation studies, he made another decision that will bring him into another group of friends. Instead of going into Biotechnology together with his college friends, he opted to do Biochemistry, something that he have a deep interest in. He is going into this new course alone, meaning that he had to adapt to the new environment again.

Did he regretted it ? Hell NO. His university life will definitely be one of the most amazing moments in his entire life. There, he made new friends with people from all over Malaysia. Learning culture from other states and at the same time, improving his poor mandarin. Together with his friends, they spend a lot of time together, going for karaoke session, steamboat/makan makan session, shopping session, cooking together, going for trips together and etc etc. All these moments are moments that will be remembered for life. How can I forget our trip to Port Dickson ? How can I can forget our trip to Cameron Highlands ? How can I can forget our graduation trip to Phuket ?

My relatives used to ask me, why didn't you opt to study overseas. It's not like you cannot get a place in oversea university and it would be a very good experience for me. I know a lot of my cousins are overseas graduates, with a few from the Ivy league and Top 8 universities in Australia. But hey, we can't make a comparison like that. I love my time in UTAR and I'm proud to announce that I graduated from UTAR. Thou it wasn't really a great university, but I have my time there and the experience is priceless. You don't have to be in the best university to learn, you can still learn if you have the determination.

Today, I am an official graduate from UTAR. I think after all, I did make a good decision and that decision really changes me a lot. I have become more matured, more decisive and more importantly, I know what my future goals are. Thou, we are no longer classmates, but we are friends. And I vow that I will continue to keep in touch with all my coursemates ! As I have said a lot of times, Biochemistry Class of May 09' rocks !

Dunno what week is this =.="

It's already Friday !

Another week is over and in a few more days, I would be able to meet lots of friends again. Friends from UTAR, UK and of course, Australia.

Convocation is on 8th of August, 8 days from today. At first thought, its really exciting for me to receive my scroll on the stage, in front of so many people, especially my beloved parents. However, as I think further much responsibilities I would need to shoulder as soon as I have officially graduated.

My dad is particularly unhappy after he heard that I was rejected by Kraft for Graduate Trainee Position. I was a little bit disappointed as well, as I knew I didn't put in my 100% effort during the 3rd interview cum assessment. I wasn't expecting that type of evaluation on that day and it really caught me by surprise. However, it is a good experience and should I apply for Management Trainee position again, I would be much prepared for what I'm going to be tested on.

As for now I'm still hunting for a job that I like and I am quite picky on this. I doesn't want to work in something that I have no passion in it, as this would not bring out the best in me. My parents are quite concern about me especially my dad, who is already planning to get me into an MBA program or to force me to further study in any postgraduate program that I would like to do. So, I am praying hard that I could get a job as soon as possible to avoid going back to university so soon!

Let's not talk too much about my career. Talk about my life for the past one whole week. Apart from the bad news from Kraft, life is pretty good for this week.

This week, I spend most of my time either by watching DVD or looking for other job opportunities. And since I knew that I would like to do something related to management or business in future, I spend some of my free time learning some tools of trades in the business world. I learn some terms related to investment/business world reading business magazines (Times, Forbes, Newsweek =.=") and playing some real time investing game (its darn addictive !!).

I also did some shopping this week. I went to IKEA yesterday with my mom to get some new furniture and household items. I bought a few new photo frame and some file case. The reason I am buying photo frames is that, I have washed out a few course pictures and I felt there is a need to change the old frame. On Tuesday, I cleaned my entire room and it took me blardy 6 hours++ to clean up my blardy room. It seems that I haven't been cleaning the room for quite some time and I found tonnes of rubbish and papers. Some of these papers dated back to year 2006 when I was still doing foundation in TARC. I "restructure" my entire study table and displayed out some memorable photos in those frames.

Some round candle ! It is so cute !

Deng, the size of IKEA. Huge

Photo frames

My table after cleaning and redecoration. So nice rite ? Hehe

Don't be surprise if I am about to tell you that this was the first time I have been to IKEA. People closed to me knows that I rarely step my foot into Mutiara Damansara area especially Curve area. So, I was pretty amused when I first entered IKEA together with my mom. If I had the cash, I would definitely splurge on that day. The way they design/decorate those bedroom is just what I wanted for my own room/ my own house.

Anyway, these days I have been doing some pretty intense jogging during the evening.(too free at home =.="). All these running makes me healthier but also unusually hungry during midnight. I hate the hungry feeling and those drumming noises from my stomach. When I am hungry, I would have two choice. 1) Get some McD or 2) cook something to eat.

Now, let me tell you some story about my mom. My mom is a great cook. In fact she is so good, that I have only listen to praise from friends that have the opportunities to dine at my home. She is a firm believer of this principle, "let your kids learn and let them learn it the hard way". Yeah, very true. She is one of the main reason for who I am today.

I have start learning how to take care of myself since I was a young kid, age around 7-8. Back then, my mom thought me how to cook, how to handle the stove and how to prepare food properly. Many of you might not know that, my parents went outstation quite often and usually I was left home alone together with my brother. Throughout so many years, I have learn to cook some simple food to make sure that I am able to survive, when my mom is not at home. Cooking is one of my small hobby. I love to try new recipe, especially cooking western food (too bad, usually only the special one can try it. Hahahahaha).

Weekend !

Its another weekend again. And its nearing the end of July.

I have been under the holiday mode for almost 3 months and its really getting bored with me sitting at home everyday, watching drama, waiting for people to call me out or me planning up something very wuliao. My convocation ceremony will be held at Wisma MCA in two weeks time and I already start planning activities for that particular week. Well, activities that include gathering with all my biochemist comrades, dinner with all my good friends (some purposely fly back from Australia to attend my convocation, so touch =.=" -> actually they come back for holiday) and dinner with my big family and another round of studio photograhpy.

I'm still waiting for Kraft call and the result is not out yet. It is that hard to decide among 15 of us, which 5-10 will be selected. I really have no idea. But whatever it is, I am still waiting over here. If there is no result by Monday, I would send up another application for management trainee in UOB Bank. And I certainly hope that F&N or Malayan Flour Mills would give me a call by then.

Well, nothing much happened during the entire week. I basically spend most of my time at home, watching TVB drama and analysing the market. US stock market is recovering from the earlier recession and you could see computer giant and electronic giant stock begin to show signs of improvement. Opsss. Why I suddenly touch about all these stock thing ? Haha. I don't know, just telling you guyz what I really do at home.

I have started back my jogging regime. Everyday, I would jog for about 45 minutes - 1 hour which cover a distance of about 5-7 km. At first, it was hard. For the first two days, my entire leg felt numb after jogging and I dont even have the energy to climb stairs. Soon, its getting better and today, I managed to jog non stop for approximately 30 minutes. I hope to continue to improve on my stamina and then get back into the pool.

This noon, I received a call from a girl in Australia. Canberra to be exact. Hehe, guess who she is ? It is nice to hear from her again as the last time I spoke to her was during last month dinner in Chilis. She starts telling me about how big is ANU but also how she regretted chosing it. The reason ? The postgraduate programme is not up to her expectations and she knew it is difficult to compete with some of the best brains around the world there. And now she tell me how she regretted for not chosing universities in Melbourne or Sydney (Melbourne University, UNSW, RMIT, University of Sydney). Haha. Actually, I have selected this few universities as potential university for me to do my postgraduate studies incase I can't find a proper job in time (by September I guess).

UNSW is one the university I like most and most likely, I would be going there. However, that was my original plan, but now I intend to do an MBA instead of an MSc. But the some MBA programs require working experience which I am lacking of. So I also very lost. Dunno what to choose at this stage. Hence the best option is to work first.

But talking about work, seriously, I don't know what is happening to Malaysia market. The government had started talking about the Bio Valley back in year 2000 something. Till now, I dont see much improvement. Compared to Singapore, they have constructed their very own Bio Polis, they develop a region known as Buona Vista, which is a town that houses all Bio-related research and development company/firm. Now, Singapore is attracting thousands of expert to work there, with an attractive salary and possibily, getting the resident status. Yet Malaysia, we see degree holder working as lab technician with salary of 1.3k - 2.2k, scientist with salary of 2.5k - 4k. Haihz. So if you ask me, without a Master degree, dont go into research please.

I dont't know why I am crapping all these here. Maybe because I am too free now. Hehe. I guess that's all for this post. Will try to update more often. Hehe.

Shopping and Working

Malaysia Megasales !!!! Yeah !!!

It's back and this time around, I shop as a fresh graduate, walking into the career path of my life. For the first time, I don't shop for jeans anymore but instead I look for business slack. For the first time, I resist from buying some cute/funny T-shirts but I spend hundreds on working shirts and ties.

Two of my G2000 shirts cost me RM 239 T_T

My 3 new G2000 shirts ....weeeeeeee

Since I'm already splurging on clothes, I saw some good discount in Nike shops and I'm desperately in need of a new running shoe so that I can get back onto the track. Yeah, I need to run/jog again to improve my stamina so that I could swim again. I admit that I am very lazy throughout my university days. I skip scouting, choose to sleep rather than to have a morning jog and worst, I am lazy enough to follow my brother to the gym for workout or swimming session at Chun Hoo's house or Uncle Wai's house. Thou my weight didn't change much during these 3 years, but the lack of exercise surely have some impact on me.

My new Nike Air Max Turbulence !

The last blood test of mine showed that there were slight increase in the amount of LDL cholesterol in my body. Worst, that time, when I was in Phuket, I can only swim 2 rounds of pool before exhausting myself and needed to stop for a while to catch my breathe. The fact that I'm still 22 but exhibiting stamina of an older man certainly worries me a lot. I made up mind since then, that I need to run again to pick up my stamina again.

With the new shoes, I am jog around a park every evening now, for an hour. The first few days were hell. My muscle cramp so many times and it was swollen and pain when I reach home. Maybe after a long time of no heavy exercise, the sudden huge impact on the muscle do result in all these pain. However, after one week, I feel good and getting better with my stamina. It's not as good as in the past yet, but I am eager to improve my stamina again. Afterall, I need go back into the pool and compete with a 8poh during December. Hahaha.

Yesterday, we celebrated Joyce's 22nd birthday. Although there were only 3 person (Hoi Ling, Joyce and me) but we still have a good time, joking and catching up with one another. As usual, I was assigned as the driver, picking up that two girls from their respective house. Then we decide to have Japanese food in Rakuzen at Jln Raja Chulan.

However, upon parking my car in Pavilion, I told Hoi Ling that there is a Tony Roma outlet in Pavilion. She suggested that we should have Tony Roma instead and we were ok with that suggestion. But luck wasn't on our side, when we found that there was a full house in Tony Roma and they require me to pen down my name on the waiting list and wait for approximately 10 minutes ( which I know, its just an approximate and usually we have to wait longer). I am dead hungry that time so I decided that we should try TGI Fridays situated on the 6th floor of Pavilion.

We headed to TGI Friday and suprisingly we find quite a few empty tables within that outlet, thou its a Saturday night. Without hesitating, I asked the manager for a table for 3. We were seated within 5 minutes and placed our orders within 15 minutes.

That night, all 3 of us decided to have steak. I love steak and I would love to try how good is TGI Friday's steak (I never had a meal before in TGI Fridays until yesterday night). I ordered one set of buffalo wings, NY Strip Steak (Joyce), Sirloin Steak ( Hoi Ling) and Ribeye Steak (me). The food arrived within 20 minutes and we start enjoying our meal.

The steak taste good and it was cooked medium rare (as requested by me). However, I find the meal rather big portion and the mash potato suck. I also find that the thicker parts were rather rare thou it's a common phenomenon when it comes to steak with uneven thickness. I would rate it 3 star out of 5 star, definitely not the best steak I have had so far. And the meal is more pricely compared to what I can get at The Ship and almost equivalent to the better one in San Francisco Steakhouse at KLCC.

My ribeye steak :D

Hoi Ling with her Sirloin Steak

Joyce with her NY Strip Steak

We finish our dinner at 9.30++. It was quick thou but we have some nice chat during that time. I send them home and by 11.20 pm I reached home. The reason I'm going home so early is because I have another appointment with my beloved gang. It's a night full of booze. But I didn't drink much. Something was in my mind all the time but I dunno what. But it is a crazy night with lots of jokes, both funny and hamsap.

Today, I went out with TC for a quick lunch at One Utama and to meet Sean. Sean is in KL with his dad for some business thingy. We have a bit of catching up chat at Vietnamese Kitchen where we have our lunch there. I got to know that lots of people have difficulties finding a good job and a few of them were given a very low salary for what qualification they have. Its rather amusing to me, when a degree holder receive a salary much like a diploma holder. To me, its the employer that should be blame. They are just taking the advantage of this current situation to hire some cheap labor and I'm sure some people are willing to work even with a low salary like that. Spoiling the market ? You be the judge. But I do hope that these people will realize they are being taken advantage of and get a better job with a better pay. They deserve better for what they are capable of.

Lastly, I went to the Kraft Asia 3rd assessment on last Friday. It was a fun experience to have and lucky me, I was placed in a group with 5 girls (I suspect conspiracy ni !). The presentation on the case study was abit tension for me. I am preseting to a group of experts, teaching them how to solve a crisis (they are freaking experience compared to me !). That kwai lou financial officer is a funny dude whereby he crack a lot jokes with us to calm us down. I think I did ok for the presentation while two of my groupmates definitely do better than me. However, I was relieved that they called me in for the computer assessment then, which means, I was shortlisted again, from the presentation thingy.

Now, I just have to wait for the result of the assessment and their offer. The results will be out tomorrow and I am hoping for the best. Let the god decide that whether I should leave KL to work in Penang or JB or continue to work in KL. Its an offer too good to turn down and I knew, should I receive the offer, I would be staying in somewhere else for at least 2 years. Hahaha. Something I am not mentally prepared for but I think I should be able to take up the challenge.

Till then, Tata !!!!
